This phenomenal property is located just 3 hours from Denver, 5 hours from Lincoln, 5.5 hours from Omaha and minutes from Lake McConaughy. The historic North Platte River bottom was part of the original Oregon Trail route used by fur trappers and traders. This 102 acres sitting on approximately 1/2 mile of the North Platte River, is stunning and has more wildlife and waterfowl than you could ever imagine. For hunters and wildlife enthusiasts, the river accretion ground has a natural spring that feeds a rejuvenated slough that rarely freezes. Ducks and geese gather in the slough and back waters throughout the year and the migratory birds flock to this area by the thousands. Whitetail deer traverse the meadows and accretion area daily. During the whitetail rut, excellent quality bucks follow does through the meadow, up the driveway and stand in front of the house. A natural corral in the “stadium area” makes a perfect blind. Elk and protected mule deer occasionally show up as well. Flocks of wild turkey make their way across the pastures and meadow as part of a regular routine during mating season in the spring and again in the fall.
Bird watchers will be in awe of the bald and golden eagles, great blue herons, countless species of hawks, pelicans, swans and thousands of species of migratory birds that call this property home and appear annually. The Garden Country Refuge is in the Central flyway waterfowl migration route and has the 3rd highest number of bird species in the United States. Your very own stretch of river is host to the massive gathering of roosting Sandhill Cranes annually from February thru April. Walk down to the river pre-dawn to witness and / or photograph their extraordinary mating dances. Watch from your living room at dawn as thousands of cranes take off at once to graze in the outlying corn fields and then return again to the river at dusk.
Tucked against a protective hillside, an efficient non-traditional 980.5 sq foot custom open style cabin (914 sq. ft. miain floor and 66.5 sq. ft. loft plus an additional 241 sq. ft. of storage) with a bedroom and loft is fully finished inside with beetle kill pine and slate tile. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances and butcher block counters. The mudroom / laundry area has a tiled walk in shower for you and the dogs and the bathroom has a claw foot tub. The cabin comfortably sleeps 6.
Multiple fenced and gated pastures, hay meadows, corrals and watering areas are set up to run 6-10 cows/pairs or accommodate horses. The property boasts an historic 1852 gravesite from the Oregon Trail and granite marker from the State of Nebraska. An original 1890’s stone house made from limestone blocks hewn from the local hills and an early 1900 bunkhouse also sit on the property.
